Italic Letters
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Italic Letters: Calligraphy and Handwriting, and Write Now: A complete self-teaching program for better handwriting?
Italic Letters emphasizes some of the more elaborate styles of
italic calligraphy (Basic, Formal, Chancery, and Cursive Italic) often
used for wedding and dinner invitations, special announcements, and more
formal correspondence. It offers examples of each in both monoline (any
regular pen or pencil) and edged pen (calligraphy pen with a straight edge).
Write Now concentrates more on improvement of everyday handwriting,
although there is a chapter devoted to edged pen writing.
Does Portland State University offer a calligraphy class for the Getty-DubayItalic?
Portland State University does not offer a scheduled class at this
time, however we do offer a free three-hour workshop once a year on the
Saturday in January closest to John Hancock's birthday.
Who can use Italic Letters?
Both calligraphers and individuals interested in learning calligraphy can learn from
this book. Step-by-step clear instructions and helpful hints offer the novice
the kind of information needed to begin and progress. Detailed coverage of the
four italic styles, and the chapter on variations of these four styles can add
to the repertoire of an experienced calligrapher. The wonderfully creative chapter
on Design offers valuable information on general layout techniques, handsome letter
designs for personal correspondence, and two designs on how to hand make a book.
